The Houndoom dipped his head in a curt greeting. "Chase, Brook wants you," he muttered, his eyes remaining fixed on him. "She's in the barn."
"Nah," Note replied tiredly. "Thank you though. Just... whatever they gave me is wearing off. Getting shot hurts."

"Eh?" Chase blinked, rising to his paws with a curious look imprinted on his face. Without another word, the smaller Mightyena pushed passed Don and started towards the barn. Whenever Brook wanted him, it was probably important.
Ellie frowned, rubbing her arm, feeling as if she'd gotten shot, too. "Want me to get you a lighter painkiller? I have advil and tylenol and stuff in the cabinet..." she mentioned quietly, eyes peaking up at him.

Donetello watched the smaller Mightyena race off toward the barn. Then he turned slowly back to Erol. His tail swished, and his eyes drifted away awkwardly.
Note managed a smile. "It's not that bad yet," he said lightly, looking at her graciously. "But thanks for offering."

Erol looked over the Houndoom critically. The scoundrel who'd stolen his betrothed. His face remained indifferent though, and he faked a casual smile. "So," he mused, a wicked grin overlapping his previous. "How's your daughter?"
"It's a shame that she couldn't be a Poochyena like Brook's actual friends and relatives," he murmured, a regal expression on his bi-colored face, brows raised as he challenged the canine. "Then Chris wouldn't feel like such an outcast..."
"I-I'll go get them, so if it does get worse, they'll be right here," she stuttered, getting to her feet and rushing into the kitchen. The nabbed the bottles out of the pills cabinet, got an ice-cold glass of water and reapproached Note, dropping the supplies on the coffee table in front of him.

The words hit home for Don. He narrowed his eyes at the wolf Pokémon, but ignored his taunts. "You're right. It would," he conceded.
Note watched her do so before smiling graciously. "Thank you... Why are you so..." He drifted off as the word evaded him and it took him a moment to searchnhis hazy mind to find it. "...jumpy?"

"It could have happened, too, you know," he muttered, a hint of a growl entering the canine's voice. "If you hadn't stolen Brook from me, she'd fit in just fine with her uncle and step-dad." Erol wasn't truely Chris' step-father, but he'd behaved like one since she was born. "You know that before Chris saw herself in a puddle, she really thought I was her father?" he continued, brows raised as if it surprised him, too. In reality, though, he'd only behaved like that to her to try to win the female wolf over while her boyfriend wasn't around.
Eleanor wasn't prepared for his question. She searched her mind for a proper answer, but couldn't find one that didn't sound ridiculous. She just gawked, open mouthed as her gaze slid away from his and her cheeks reddened. "Um... er..."

The fur on Don's shoulders rose as he listened go the wolf speak. Hr did not know what he thought he would accomplish; even if it would be easier for Chris, to have been born a Poochyena, nothing would change who she was now or how little an influence he had been in her life. But that was partially why he was taking Erol's antagonism. He had something to say.
"I want to thank you, Erol," he said, his gaze shifting to the ground.
With some effort Note slowly pulled himself into a sitting position, wincing a bit as he did so.

Erol's brows raised momentarily, first out of innocent surprise, and then out of suspicion. "For what?" he muttered, his expression cross.
Ellie watched as Note pulled himself up, and quickly glided to his side. "Y-You really shouldn't sit up. Is it not comfortable? I can get you more pillows and blankets," she fretted, getting to her feet and looking for a closet where she might have spares.

"For being the father I couldn't be," he said, his eyes still on the ground. "For being good to Chris. I owe you for that."
"Ellie... I'm okay," Note assured her, momentarily distracted from the growing pain in his shoulder by his friend's anxiety. He winced a bit but quickly wiped the expression off his fac before Ellie could see it.

Erol's brows raised, but he kept his dignified look. "Yes, I know," he huffed, eyes half-lidded. "Someone had to do it, Donetello, what, with you abandoning them and all," he murmured, staring at his dark black claws skeptically.
"No, no, I have to get you something," she fret, grabbing an odd assortment of pillows and blankets and dumping them in front of the maimed boy when she returned.

Donetello grimaced. "You know full well I wanted to stay here," he said, working to keep his voice controlled.
Note watched her wistfully before reaching over and chingrly picking up some blankets with his uninjured arm. He put them behind him so he could prop himself up without too much effort. "Thank you," he said, smiling a bit at her.

"Even so, you didn't," he grinned, wrapping his dark, fluffy tail by his flank.
Ellie was relieved that the boy wasn't being stubborn with her. "Is that better?" she smiled sweetly, her voice almost a coo.

Donetello's eyes narrowed. "What do you want me to tell you, Erol?" he demanded, impatient.
Note inclined his head toward her and smiled, deciding to play along. "Much better."
Upstairs EV stirred as she began to awaken. Her eyes squeezed shut, and then slowly opened. The first thing she noticed was the pain in her chest. It was still there, but far less intense thsn it had been. The second thing she noticed was Angelo beside her. She sighed, pressing her nails into the sheets but easing up before they pierced them. The last thing she clearly remembered was seeing the woman coming toward her, and then after that it was all a haze. Her mouth twitched and she licked her lips. She was a bit startled when she tasted blood. Human blood.
Suddenly she was desperate to fill in the blanks. One paw reached out and she gently prodded Angelo in the shoulder.

"There's nothing I want to hear," the hoity-toity mutt fashioned, lifting his nose to the air so he may look down on the ram-horned dog. It's something I want to see. Erol would play innocent for now, if the mongrel was too stupid to realize that Erol was still upset with the whole Brook ordeal. Ever since Don came around, Brook started to drift away from Erol and Chase. Chase, of course, still lingered around her like a dumb puppy, but the three of them weren't as close as they were before. That upset him. In this Arceus-forsaken ranch full of the dimwitted, those two were the only solitude he was granted. And he had loved Brook. He had been ready to propose, ready to marry, and create worthy heirs to the pack. He wanted to blame it on Ellie, but the poor girl didn't know what she had done. She had defended herself when Erol and his pack had wanted to defend their territory, and walked away with a prize. It was almost admirable. He would have been fine living on the ranch as long as he had Brook and Chase close by. But that Houndoom... the entire future he had planned out had shattered. They would have been able to make due with living in the ranch... they could have found some more canine Pokémon... started another pack, here in the ranch... But now that Brook had a child... a child with Donetello, Erol was at a loss. This Houndoom had ruined his life, and Erol would make him pay.
Angelo's eyes fluttered open as soon as he felt a paw rouse his shoulder. His head quickly shot up and his ears alert. He blinked awkwardly at first, but then remembered the red 'eon by his side. ["EV, how do you feel?"] he asked quickly. The hybrid had always been a tough Pokémon; seemingly invincible to him, but the bullet wound... it had brought her down. It was a miracle she was still alive.
Alerted by the Umbreon's barks, Ellie turned her head. "Oh! Vivian! She's waking up," she said aloud, tapping Note very gently on his shoulder and gesturing toward the hazy Pokémon.
Alerted

The arrogance of the gesture was nearly enough to make Donetello want to come at him, and in a moment of nostalgia he realized that it was not long ago when that was exactly what he would have done. But he was no longer a child. He swallowed his anger and met the Mightyena's gaze evenly. He was beginning to understand what this was really about.
"You think I stole her from you, don't you?" he said monotonously.
EV stared back at the Umbreon, puzzled for a moment. Then, as she realized that he was referring to the wound on her chest, she replied. "[Not bad, considering. Did I bite someone?]"
Note looked toward the Pokémon as well. His eyes shined, and then a bit of a relieved smile spread across his face, followed by a wicked wave of guilt. He had jumped in front of a bullet and still had not saved his Pokémon the pain. And more than that, he had nearly forgotten her when he was hopped up on pain medication. What kind of trainer was he?
"Hey, Viv," he called, looking at her, unsure. Would she blame him for it? He really hoped not...
EV jumped a bit at the sound of his voice and turned toward him. Her ears lowered in a look of wariness. "" she asked lowly.
