Two days had passed at the ranch, and as it always was, it felt like no one had ever left. Everyone had fallen back into their regular 'ranch roles', and little mention had been made of the escapades through the city.
But Austin had been a little restless. Though he was careful to control it in front of his parents, he had a lot of trouble getting his mind of his discovery at Lake of Rage. All he could picture when he closed his eyes were those big blue eyes staring at him as they surfaced by the dock. He wanted to see her again. He wanted at least to know her name.
And so, he had very little luck sleeping. No matter where or when or how he tried, he simply couldn't stay still and rest. He was simply too caught up in all the questions he had about his mysterious Vaporeon.
Early one night- just after the ranch had gone quiet except for the quiet nocturnal Pokémon mulling about -Austin conceived an idea that he could not let wait. He stood, carefully maneuvering through the barn and away from his parents, and over to his adopted brother. It took several proddings before Chance stirred, and even when he did, it was hardly a movement at all.
"The barn better be on fire," he growled, his eyes still closed as he moved away from Austin's paw.
"Chance, wake up, I need your help."
"You can have it. In the morning. Leave me alone."
"But Chance, this can't wait!"
The Espeon opened his eyes to irritated slits and stared blindly through the dark at the Umbreon.
"I need you to help me with something. Come outside."
With that Austin turned and headed out of the barn. Chance growled lowly, but then slowly stood, stretched, and carefully padded after him, conscious of the sleeping bodies that littered the floor.
The moon was almost full, and in the moonlight Austin glowed like a Halloween lawn ornament. His glowing green eyes looked even wider than usual, and his rings, which were perfectly yellow in the day, glowed with a slight green tint in the moonlight. Chance couldn't imagine where he got that from; both of his parents were perfectly not green in every way. But since that was the most peculiar thing about his brother, it was nothing to complain about. It obviously could have been a lot worse.
Austin didn't stop until they had rounded the side of the barn and he was convinced that they were alone. "Chance, I need you to help me break out."
The older -eon stared at him as if he hadn't heard him at all. "...What? Why?"
"I need to get back to the lake. It's not very far from here, and if you can just help me get over the fence, we could get there really fast! Please?"
"Why, Austin?"
The Umbreon shuffled on his paws as if the ground under him was suddenly too hot. "I want to see someone in the lake." Upon Chance's dissatisfied silence he added, "There's a Vaporeon in there. She's really pretty. I want to know here name."
Chance stared at him blankly. This was an awful reason to wake up a creature who drew his strength from the sun. "No."
"Please, Chance!" He nearly headbutted the Espeon as he moved forward, until Chance was pressed against the wall. "Mum and Dad won't let me go to the lake or swim anymore, and she'll only talk to me. I just want to see her again, please? I'd do the same for you. I'll be careful, it won't take long."
"You would not do the same for me because I would never ask you to do it," Chance replied flatly, putting his paw on Austin's chest and pushing him back. "If we get caught, your mom will set me on fire. No way."
Austin's eyes widened pitifully, and he let out a whimper that sliced the air like a knife. "Please, Chance? I've never asked anything of you like this."
Chance scowled as he stared down at the pitiful face. His tail twitched; he knew this was a bad idea, but even after evolution Austin hadn't lost the ability to look absolutely pathetic. His jaw clenched hard, and finally, he scoffed and stomped his paw. "Fine! But if we get caught, I'm taking you back to that lake and drowning you."
Austin gasped in delight, and he hopped up and did an animated dance before turning and heading for the fence. With a regretful sigh, Chance slunk after him.
