The next night, none the wiser, Angelo pressed his nose into the neck fur of his fiery furred, mutant mate. As an Umbreon, no matter his sleep schedule, it would always feel unnatural nodding off with the moon in the sky. It had been quite a while since the black Pokémon had gotten any proper rest, but with a few naps during the day, he was able to get his forty winks. It left him drowsy, however, in the intervals between. Weary enough that with the breeze blowing in the opposite direction, he couldn't catch the scent of a foreigner in the ranch.
She had been here before... she couldn't place when or why, but everything about the situation was familiar. The white picket fence, the moon rising, the mix of smells of Pokémon... it made her blood boil, her ears sting. But why?

The feeling of her mate's face pressed against her neck alerted Vivian to the fact that she was still very much awake. Sleeping came and went in intervals for her: sometimes she could fall asleep anywhere, any time, almost on command, and other times nothing could make her sleep at all. For the last couple days her insomnia had been driving her crazy.
She shifted, turning to face Angelo but allowing him to keep his head against her neck, and forced her eyes to close. But the sounds of all the softly breathing, sleeping Pokémon was maddening. Her ears twitched as she tried to focus her attention on something else, anything that would hold her attention more pleasantly, and in doing so, she caught an unfamiliar scent.
No. It was familiar. And that was even more unsettling.
She slowly lifted her head, forcing her mate to move his, and whispered dismissively, "I'll be right back". Then, eyes narrowed to keep her glowing to a minimum, she snuck out of the barn as inconspicuously as possible.

The Leafeon slunk around the edge of the ranch, beige fur prickling. With each step, her unease grew, but she wasn't afraid. Not of the Pokémon, anyway. She was afraid of why she felt so... angry. Her lip twitched, her nose curled. It was moonhigh, but she was ready to fight.
Angelo lifted his head slowly, blinking his confused, crimson eyes. "Sure," he replied hesitantly with a slight drawl, uncertain with the motives of his mate. She could be going to take a leak, but her eyes were narrowed -- no, she was onto something. He stayed put until the Flumbreon had taken her steps into the darkness before slinking onto his owns paws to follow suit.
Koni's ear twitched. The rustling of the grass... distant, but present. Someone else was awake. Someone in the ranch.

The glow of the moon turned Vivian into a mass of shifting rings and narrowed slits. The beige newcomer made her stop in her tracks, made her fur prickle. She grounded her paws, rigid, and let out a hostile growl.

"It's you!" the Leafeon chirped, delighted with her find. The physical form of this... this beast... it all came crashing back to her. This was who she was here for. This Pokémon was what sent her blood on a rage, her beating in a panic. Without another word or an introduction, the Grass Type sped daringly towards the Fire Type, no fear in her crazed, dark eyes. No moves, no special attacks, the 'Eon went for the killing blow. Instinct fueled her movements, a drive for blood clacking in the back of her ears.
It was too late for this bullshit. Angelo wasn't even sure what was happening, only that this blur was firing itself at his Vivian, fangs bared. He couldn't charge an attack, he couldn't properly retaliate, but he had to get Viv out of the way. His brief time as a wild Eevee had been packed with similar confrontations -- that was why he'd welcomed life with Ellie so utterly and entirely.
The sleek form of the Umbreon butted his mate's shoulder, exchanging himself for the Leafeon's blow. When Koni realised she'd only landed on this stranger's shoulder, she let her weight fall over him, tearing her fangs all the way from his shoulder blade to his nape before stumbling into the grass.

Knocked off her balance from an angle she was paying no attention to, Vivian fell to the ground without catching herself, and watched in shock and confusion as her mate took the violent blow that she was ready to counter. Her eyes widened to glowing round orbs as she watched the Leafeon tear into Angelo's side, and then both of them tumble to the ground.
Her livid, horror-stricken energy released itself in a volatile, deafening shriek that was audible for only an instant before she threw herself at the Leafeon, sinking her jaws into her shoulder blade until her teeth hit bone. The air around her grew hot and dark, and ripples of dark energy came off her body, out of her mouth like a thick black smog. The air around her heated and darkened until both she and the Leafeon in her clutches burst into flames, both consumed in a ball of black fire that destroyed the grass and blackened the ground beneath them. When it faded, the black haze was invisible but just as painfully potent, and Vivian, empowered by her own flames, threw the Leafeon aside like a ragdoll, sending her slamming into one of the posts of the fence.
Her rage quickly cooled to icy terror as her attention turned to Angelo. She hurried back over to him, her eyes wide and round as the moon as she tried to assess how hurt he was. "Angelo. Angelo, say something."

Headstrong as she was, Koni had not considered that perhaps she would have a certain disadvantage in a battle against a Fire Type. She was tough, she... She was on fire. Her fur had synced its temperature to that of her blood, only externally, it hurt. The Leafeon let out something of a snarl or yelp as she was tossed against the fence, stretching out her claws as she collapsed into the grass with singed fur and burning muscles.
Angelo was in the grass, too. Redness clumped around his wound where blood matted his smoky, black fur. "Sh...Shi...t..." the Umbreon wheezed, the stinging sensation rippling throughout his neck and body. His neck... His Arceus damn neck. He couldn't communicate it, though -- he couldn't speak.

Vivian's eyes just kept seeming to get wider and wider. She felt her shoulders start to shake and she planted her feet like she was about to attempt to withstand an earthquake. "I'll be right back," she said, weakly, before taking off in a stumbling gallop toward the barn.
With hit-and-miss accuracy she jumped and weaved over and around Pokémon as she tried to get to the larger part of the barn as quickly as possible. The massive orange body glowing by firelight was a welcome relief, and she headbutted the Charizard hard enough to wake him out of a sound sleep. Groggy and puzzled, Elliot lifted his head slowly and looked around, and when he could not immediately see Vivian she ran up to him and planted her paws on his face. "Elliot, I need you to open the door so I can get into the house."
Blinking back sleepiness, the Charizard seemed to move in slow motion, and Vivian felt her heart racing as the time seemed to drag. "Why?"
"Angelo is hurt, I can't open the door!" she snapped. "Get up! Hurry!"
Sensing her alarm, Elliot slowly rose to his feet, careful not to jostle his sleeping family, who was curled up in his arms and tail. Once he was free of them he scooped up Vivian, spread his wings, and in one arc was flying through the rafters of the barn and out the back. He landed in front of the door of the ranch and opened the door, and Vivian raced inside, stumbled up the stairs (they were still an obstacle to her) and headbutted the bedroom door open. It took her two leaps to make it onto the bed, and she clawed the covers off the two sleeping blonds in the process. Note woke to sharp metal claws raking across his chest-- harmlessly, but it still alarmed him. Before he could even fugure out exactly what was going on Vivian had grabbed him by the arm and yanked him off the bed. He had hardly hit the bottom before the mutant was back on the bed, and she pushed Ellie off the other side.
Note laid on the floor for a moment, completely disoriented and barely registering the thump that accompanied his girlfriend to the floor. He sat up slowly and was met with Vivian's glowing red eyes in his face. With a startled gasp he shuffled back, staring at her wide-eyed. "What the hell, Viv?"

Fear flickered through the Umbreon's glossy eyes as his blurry mate disappeared into the night. He knew she wasn't abandoning him, but he still found it difficult watching her go. The pain in his side and neck was so furious that it was actually beginning to numb, and he knew that couldn't be good. His breaths were coming out in ragged gasps and even his glowing patches of fur seemed to be dimming... he hadn't felt this awful in a long time.
Meanwhile, inside the house, Ellie had been rolled onto the floor and brutally awoken (in her opinion, anyway). The blonde groaned and propped herself onto her elbow, rubbing the crown of her head drowsily. "What the hell..." she barely managed to mutter coherently. With a flop, she leaned her upper torso back against the bed, glaring at Note through narrowed eyes. "You should probably see a doctor with how much you fucking roll at night."

"Ellie," Note muttered flatly, incredulous and disoriented.
Before either of them could go on Vivian let out a sharp bark that made Note jump again. The mutant hardly ever made a noise over a growl when he was around, and this was a full on, energetic bark. He had never heard her actually bark. He stumbled to his feet, trying to wake up his drowsy body, and as he did so Vivian leapt across the bed, grabbed Ellie by the arm, and started dragging her toward the door. When this was taking too long she released the door, sent a commanding growl Note's way, and ran out of the room. Note stared after her stupidly as he tried to register exactly what all of this could possibly mean.

Ellie's eyes momentarily shot open at the sharp bark that emitted from Vivian's maw, squeaking as she fell back on her ass. In her drowsy daze, she hadn't even registered that the Flumbreon was in the room. She didn't have much time to think about it either as the red 'Eon lunged towards her, taking her arm and dragging her towards the door. Vivian was hardly so dramatic, and with her mind finally catching up, Elle decided it'd be best to just trust that the Pokémon's aggression was in everyone's best interest.
The girl scrambled to her feet and threw on an oversized T-shirt that was strewn out on the edge of the dresser by the door before following the Eeveelution out. Hopefully nothing too terrible had happened... though the urgency in her boyfriend's Pokémon put the idea to rest.
Koni, meanwhile, had miraculously gotten back on her paws. She was durable, hardy, and probably insane to top it all off -- pain meant little to her. She couldn't shift her foreleg much due to her shoulder, but three appendages were all she needed. She dragged herself over to the Umbreon, who in his ebbing consciousness and fright, tried growling, but it sounded a lot more like gurgling instead. ["You're one crazy sonuvabitch,"] she wheezed with a cackle, placing a paw on his temple. ["When I realised that big red thing wasn't there anymore, I tried to loosen up, y'know? But that still looks like that really hurts, wow. You gonna make it, kid? Doesn't really look like it.]"

Note suddenly became animated again as Ellie left the room, and he followed closely after her, though he didn't get very far before he was cringing, at Vivian's ungraceful and seemingly painful descent down the stairs. She ended up falling down most of them, but she picked herself up at the bottom without a moment's hesitation and continued out the door.
Elliot had been waiting anxiously for the trio to emerge, but upon seeing a sliver of movement out in the field, he went to investigate. He picked out Angelo's dimly glowing form first, and then the charred Leafeon standing over him. Slowly he approached from behind, lumbering like a gargoyle ready to spring to life. "Excuse me, stranger. I think it's best you step away from my comrade," he said in a menacing growl, the fire on his tail widening dangerously.

Koni's singed ears perked at the gruff threat of the Charizard. These Fire Types just couldn't get enough of her... those sadistic bastards. Her hazel eyes locked into those of the orange beast as she let her claws prick at Angelo's soft skin, a smile tugging at the corners of her black lips. ["I think it's best you realise your position here, stranger,"] she warned, though her tone was upbeat and almost jolly, if not a bit misanthropic. She suddenly felt like she had some sort of leverage here, though she had no idea what she wanted in exchange of this Umbreon's life. Something had drawn her to this place, had it not?

The Charizard stiffened. "What is it that you are here for?" he growled lowly.

The Leafeon's wily grin then stiffened, as if offended. ["Well, jeez, why don't you tell me? I don't fuckin' know!"] she sighed, exasperated as she rolled back her neck in frustration, dragging the points of her claws along the opening of Angelo's gash briefly. When she cocked her muzzle back towards the lizard, another smile found its way along her white rows. ["Just needed a lil' somethin' to do."]
