"I went there once when my mother's Clefable died," Max replied nonchalantly. "We buried her in the graveyard some old man runs. Apparently he and my mother are on good terms, so if he remembers me, I guess we can ask him for some stuff."
As he walked across the shadeless ground, Codie squirmed in his pocket, poking his head out and yawning. The upper half of his body, from his forearms to his head, drooped out from the pocket lazily.

Charlie's eyes shifted to the tiny mouth Pokémon. Her eyebrows rose in surprise and she tilted her head to the side. She had never seen a ratata so small... it didn't even look real.
Penny's attention had also been grabbed by the rodent. She let out a curious trill and he eyes shined.

Max ignored all the looks his Rattata was getting and kept walking. He held up his hand to block the sun from his sensitive eyes, but it was still bright as hell. He couldn't tell if the sun was to more of his distaste or Lavender Town. The place scared him silly.
Codie heard the Meowth's trill and his head shot up quickly. Trying to regain composure, he straightened out his chest fur and kept his back straight in Max's pocket, nose in the hair very haughty-like.

Charlie finally managed to drag her eyes off the Ratata long enough to think about what was coming up. She looked at Max and asked, "So we're staying in Lavender Town?" She wasn't sure what exactly Max meant by 'ask him for stuff'. That could mean supplies or favors, right? Lavender Town didn't sound like a place she really wanted to stay for any length of time, but Max was the one calling the shots here. She was just along for the ride.

Max shook his head a little bit more quickly than he'd have liked to. "Hell no," he growled. "I can hardly stand the place in the daylight, like hell I'm spending the night." The sixteen year old was relieved when they made it to the bend, which from then on was a straight path to the gloomy little town.
It was only morning, but the lack of trees or anything of the sort made it seem all so much hotter. When looking at the ground, it was almost obscured because of the waves of heat that radiated off it. He could feel Codie beginning to pant in his pocket and prayed that the town would be coming up soon.

Charlie let out a sigh and lowered her head, in turn lowering the shadow of the baseball cap over her entire face. She unzipped her hoodie, but it didn't even occur to her to take it off; it was such a fixture of her being that she would feel naked without it. Man, it was hot though. If she remembered correctly, Lavender Town was near water. Maybe they could take a dip or something. Anything to relieve the heat.

Max was overjoyed when he could make out two houses next to each other in the distance. He was definitely sweating by that point and exhausted solely from the heat, but he picked up his pace. As he did, though, he began to notice all the wild Pokémon eyeing him from atop the rocky walls that closed in the gorge-like passage he and Charlie were passing through. It made him a little more than uncomfortable, but they'd be safe when they got to the little ghost town.

Charlie remained blissfully unaware to the Pokémon watching them from above as she hurried after Max. She could easily keep pace with him; running had always been something she had been good at, and she was as eager to get out of the heat as he was. Penny hurried after her, panting slightly from the heat. She spared a glance up at the Pokémon above and a wary growl rose in her throat.

The more Max looked up, the more he was afraid that the Pokémon would spring at them. Come on, come on, he furrowed his brows, side glancing as more and more wild Pokémon emerged. It didn't matter their species or level, Dom and Codie were no match for any of them. That needed to change.
Codie's whiskers twitched as his gaze followed his master's to and fro. He wasn't scared of them. He glared at them as they passed, forearms crossed.

Upon noticing Max's growing agitation, Charlie spared a glance up. Her eyes widened at the sight, and she quickly turned to Max. "How much farther is this town?" she asked in a whisper.

"I can see it coming up ahead, but--" Max was cut off as a flock of Fearows and Spearows flew down from the side of the path way, shrieking and flapping their wings. A few Spearows made attempts to attack Max, but he ducked and dodged out of the way. He could feel Codie clawing out of his pocket and running up his white beater and quickly grabbed the excited rodent. "No way, Codie," he hissed, holding the rat as he ran now.

The birds hit Charlie hard, and she staggered forward and after Max. She heard Penny let out a shrill yowl behind her, and the Meowth dove and swiped at birds before streaking after Charlie and taking a running leap. She landed on her back, claws digging into her hoodie, and shimmied up the girl's back like an Mankey. From there she stood and took swipes at incoming Spearows and Searows, and though she took some hits herself she managed to keep Charlie guarded from the blows.
Something in the jacket caught Charlie's eye, and as Max ran she watched as a Pokéball bounced out of the pocket and went rolling across the ground. A burst of light made Charlie aware that whatever was within it had been released, and despite her desire to keep running, she looked over her shoulder.
Standing beside the open Pokéball was a small white and green Pokémon that she had never seen before. The small creature looked around, as if drowsy. Charlie's heart sank. If the Spearows and Fearows turned their attention to it, surely it would not last a minute.

Max whirled around when he heard a Pokéball open. The mysterious green-and-white Pokémon to the side of it, he presumed, was what it had released. Was it Charlie's? He looked at her expectantly before a Fearow rammed into the back of his head, leaving talon marks on his shoulders as he was knocked down again.

Charlie whirled around as she heard Max fall, and she tried, in vain, to catch him. With a loud hiss Penny launched herself at the feathery assailant, knocking it away from Max.
The Fearows and Spearows had been drawn toward the Pokémon, forming a murder around it. The little creature looked around, not at all alarmed until the bird Pokémon started closing in on it, encasing it in a claustrophobic pile. With a startled cry the Pokémon was lost within the murder, and then with a strong psychic wave the bird Pokémon were thrown back, disoriented or nearly unconscious.
Charlie was buffeted by the psychic blast and dizzied by it, and Penny let out a startled meow as she was flung off the Fearow and onto her side.

Max shielded his eyes as a giant psychic blast pushed away all the attacking bird Pokémon. That tiny little Pokémon did that? The remaining Spearows and Fearows fled, causing mass confusion for the sixteen year old boy. "What... What the hell is that?" he gasped once all the Pokémon besides the Ralts, Penny, and Codie were gone.
