Charlie stiffened, taking a few stumbling steps away from the large bat Pokémon, her eyes wide with fear.
Without a sound Penny's tail swished, and in a stunt that would have made a parkour expert proud she took a leap onto the wall, ran along the edge of it, and punced on the Golbat, landing on its back and pinning it to the ground under her.

Max could scarcely make out Penny as she skimmed the rocky wall and leaped at the bat Pokémon, landing on the ground with it under her. His eyebrows raised, impressed. "Nice," he said, brushing himself off and getting to his feet. "Is it finished?"

With a Bite to the back of its head, the answer to that question was yes. With a delighted purr Penny picked up her large purple prize and trotted confidently out of the tunnel with the Golbat in her jaws. Charlie, a bit stunned but equally impressed, followed her. Of the two individuals with her right now, she felt just a bit safer with the Meowth than the boy.

Max followed the cat Pokémon out of the cave and though they had not been for even more than an hour, he welcomed the fresh air with open arms. The sun was setting now, he realized, and contemplated whether or not he really wanted to continue traveling in the dark. Lavender Town couldn't be too far, but the road there was sandy and rocky and teaming with wild Pokémon, as far as he'd heard. It wasn't as if they had camping supplies either, however. He turned to the girl, wanting to see if she had anything to say about their situation now.

Charlie squinted and blinked until she had readjusted to the light. She was as relieved as Max to be out of the tunnel, but the prospect of traveling in the dark was not one she looked forward to. She caught his glance and ventured to believe that he was musing about the same things as she was. "I'd rather not walk in the dark..." she muttered, a bit offhandedly.

Max sighed and crossed his arms. "Yeah," he said as he lowered his chin until it was about touching his chest. "I guess we can, uh..." he unfolded his limbs and looked around, "Find somewhere to knock out." He couldn't imagine where that would be, though. There were scarcely any trees and the ground was mostly just dirt and rocks. He guess he'd be spared of comfort tonight.

Charlie looked around and frowned. "Guess it's under the stars tonight," she muttered, scratching the back of her neck. "Find a comfortable rock, I guess."

Max nodded subtly and walked over to a small-ish sort of rock and threw his backpack down in front of it. He laid down with his head on the bag, draping the jacket over him like a blanket. With his back turned to Charlie, he sneaked his hand into the bag and pulled out a Pokéball, releasing his tiny Rattata, Codie. The purple mouse furrowed its brow, utterly confused where they were and just why on earth they were getting ready for bed outside. He noticed his trainer's eyes, however. Max was wearing an expression that he'd hid all afternoon; one that Codie hadn't seen in a long time.

Charlie did not go far. She found a tree with roots rising out of the ground and when she laid down she rested her head on that. She couldn't say that she was dissatisfied with being outside; it wasn't horribly cold, and when she zipped up her hoodie she was cool, but comfortable. She turned onto her side, her back to Max, and curled into a ball. A moment later she felt a soft warm body against her back: Penny had laid down beside her.
For the first time in a long time, she felt... at peace. Even though they were obviously vulnerable, she was comfortable. She was happy. It had been a long time since she had felt so safe, and the strangeness of that statement did not strike her until she was falling asleep.

In the morning, Max awoke with Codie curled around in the crook of his neck. He was surprised the rodent's fur hadn't tickled him awake; his neck was his most sensitive spot. His back groaned as he sat up and scooped his companion into his hands.
The teenager sighed and looked toward the sky. He wondered if the goons that were chasing him had given up or had gone to the other two possible routes he could have taken. What irked him was why they hadn't tried to trap him when he was on the rooftop. Only Charlie made it up there with him.
He quickly shook his head and got to his feet, putting the drowsy Rattata into his lose jeans pocket. Picking up his blue backpack, he looked over to the tree and wondered if the other kid was awake.

Charlie was still fast asleep in her spot, sleeping far more soundly than one would expect a person on the hard cold ground to sleep.
Penny, however, was side awake, and as Max approached the girl her tail swished and she tackled Charlie's face. Charlie jumped awake with a gasp and shot up, rubbing a small scratch on her cheek. The Meowth went tumbling across the ground, as did Charlie's hat, and her auburn hair fell to her shoulders. She rubbed her cheek, grabbed her hat, and scooped her hair into it in one swift gesture. "Arceus, Penny," she muttered.

Max had merely been standing there, simply watching the scene roll out in front of him. He was only vaguely interested, even slightly amused, watching the Meowth tackle Charlie's face. What really caught his attention was when the baseball cap she'd been wearing tumbled across the ground as well as the cat Pokémon. Max furrowed his brows and cocked his head slightly sideways. He needs a haircut.

With a sigh Charlie stood up and brushed herself off. "Guess we're going," she assumed, not completely meeting Max's eyes as she frowned at the Meowth disdainfully.

"Lavender Town isn't too far from here," he said over his shoulder, looking at the map he'd pulled out of his bag only moment ago. He stuffed it back into his backpack and looked at the long stretch of rocky terrain they were to cross before getting there. It wasn't as bad as the walls that surrounded them, since it had been carved to be passable, but it still looked dreadful.

Charlie looked around thoughtfully as she followed him, her gaze never once falling on the map. "What's Lavender Town like?" she asked. She had heard rumors; all of them were bad. But she had never believed in ghosts. Ghost Pokémon, perhaps, but not ghosts. So she wasn't sure what there was to be afraid of in the town, since that was what all the rumors centered around.
