Regardless of their proximity, the people of Johto and those of Kantō are set apart by many cultural differences. Johto residents are known for their attitudes against typical Japanese standards, mostly due to the historical rivalry between the regions, once the major seat of political power, and the Kantō region. The soil of the Johto region is rich, unlike the volcanic Kantō region, whose lands cannot maintain crops. People from Johto are considered to be more relaxed. Johto and Kantō, however different, represent a harmony of contrasting cultures living together.

Johto is west of Kantō.

Located south of Sinnoh, the Hoenn region is unique and famous for its tropical-like environments. The region does not feature a true mountain range like it's northern neighbours but instead exhibits natural environments including a volcano, a jungle, a beach, a desert, and many more.

The Sinnoh region is located north of Kantō, Johto, and Hoenn. It is composed of the large mainland, the north-eastern island of the Battle Zone, and several smaller islands on both sides of the region.

Most of Sinnoh's routes are on land, having very few water routes, in vast contrast to Hoenn. The region is divided by Mt. Coronet, roughly comparable to how the continent that Kantō and Johto make up is essentially a contiguous region.

Unova is a region far away from the other large regions of the Pokémon world, and the Pokémon which inhabit Unova are diverse and different. It features a mixture of rural locations and urban areas as well as factory towns and industrial complexes.

The Kalos region is shaped like a five-pointed star, with one of its biggest cities being Lumiose City in the north-central part of the region. It features a vast network of rivers and waterways snaking through much of its landscape, cities and towns. North-east of Lumiose City lies a mountain range where more frigid temperatures exist, extending down into the plains below. Western Kalos features a vast ocean, where the shoreside city of Shalour City lies in the middle of a cove.

The Alola region is made of up four natural islands and one artificial island. It is a popular resort destination and attracts a lot of tourists from other regions. In Alola, humans and Pokémon coexist in a very close relationship, and a culture has developed that is different from other regions.
